• Notes

  Arrived in South Africa in 1698 and was a soldier until land was allocated to him in 1703. Before his marriage to Helletje Smit, he had a daughter, Geertruy, by Maria van de Caab. According to the Stellenbosch register, Geertruy was christened on 8/11/1705. Matthys Andries had five sons and four daughters with Helletje Smit. Three of his children died young, of which two died during the small pox epidemic of 1713. Three sons survived and they are the progenitors of the three main de Beer branches. Matthys Andries de BEER, came from Wasa and it expected that the place is called till today Vaasa. Those days it was in Switzerland but today it is in Finland. Matthys Andries de Beer had a child with Maria van die KAAP, this daughter was baptised Geertruy at Stellenbosch 8 November 1705.
